Mycology

Mushrooms have their own chain. Everything is kept abstract: game times and chances, no real-world cultivation parameters.

The chain

  1. Spore Print. Fresh mushrooms and paper craft into a print (4 uses).
  2. Agar Plate. Glass panes, dried kelp and a water bottle make 2 plates. Holding the spore print in the main hand and a plate in the off hand, right-click a Still-Air Box to inoculate it. The plate colonises in about 5 minutes.
  3. Grain Spawn Jar. A glass bottle and 2 wheat. A colonised plate (main hand) inoculates a jar (off hand) in the box; the plate is used up. The jar colonises in about 10 minutes.
  4. Monotub. Fill it with Bulk Substrate (a coir brick from jungle logs, manure from plantations:manure (bone meal by default) and a water bottle), then add a colonised jar. The tub colonises in about 10 minutes.
  5. Fruiting. Mist the colonised tub with a water bottle or the Watering Can. In dim light (11 or less) and a mild climate it fruits. Right-click to pick the flush. There are four flushes, each smaller than the last (6, 4, 3, 2 mushrooms), and the tub must be misted again before each. After the fourth the tub is spent and empty.

Cultures keep growing while the item sits in a chest: their progress follows the game clock. The tooltip shows the progress, and the item looks different once colonised or contaminated.

Contamination

Every inoculation can mould. You only find out when colonisation is done:

Sterilise empty plates and jars in a Pressure Cooker over a lit campfire, fire, magma or lava. It takes about half a minute per stack. A contaminated tub is emptied with a right-click.

Species

Each species has one way into cultivation, as in reality:

SpeciesWildCultivation
Psilocybe cubensisSwamps, mangroves, jungles (on grass, mud, podzol)Spore print → plate → jar → Monotub (the easy one)
Psilocybe cyanescensTaigas, dark forestsSpore print → plate → jar → Wood Chips bed outdoors
Psilocybe semilanceata (liberty caps)Appear in the rain on pasture grass (plains, meadow) near cows and sheepNone: foraging only. Its spores give no print.
  • Mushroom blocks grow in shade (light 12 or less). Break a mature one for 1–3 fresh mushrooms, or use paper on it for a spore print (cubensis, cyanescens).
  • Wood Chips (a log makes 4): lay a bed and spawn it from a colonised cyanescens jar. The mycelium spreads through touching wood chips and fruits cyanescens on top in cool biomes (temperature 0.7 or less) in shade or rain; with Serene Seasons only from early autumn to early winter. A monotub refuses cyanescens, and wood chips refuse cubensis.
  • Liberty caps: every 10 seconds, while it rains, one cow or sheep near each player has a 1 in wildRarity (default 3) chance to leave a few caps on open grass around it in a pasture biome (plantations:has_wild/psilocybe_semilanceata), at most 4 within 8 blocks. Late-game pasture inoculation is left for later.
  • Products: fresh mushrooms dry on the Drying Rack; 2 dried mushrooms of any species and a water bottle brew Mushroom Tea. Effects come with the substance system.
  • Config: plants.psilocybe_cubensis, psilocybe_cyanescens, psilocybe_semilanceata (enabled, wild, wildRarity).
