Effects and consumables

1110 words·~5 min read

Consumables apply data-driven effect profiles. Repeated use has consequences, and three effects change what you see.

Effects

EffectPlantWhat it does
RelaxedCannabisSlow regeneration, faster hunger ("munchies"), 10 % slower
PsychedelicPsilocybe+25 % experience per level; from level III, waves of nausea
StaminaCoca15 % faster, less hunger from exertion; none at all from Y 100 up
NumbnessOpium poppy−20 % damage taken per level (at most −60 %), slower movement and mining
AlertKhatFaster mining and attacks, hunger stays put, beds refuse you
DissociationSalviaShort; you can't use, place, break or attack anything and move slowly
Withdrawal(dependency)Slower, weaker attacks, hungrier; a dose of the substance ends it
DeliriumDaturaNo upside: hyperthermia damage every few seconds (level I stops at one heart, stronger levels can kill), stumbling. Datura arrows bring it on too

The Pipe (a stick and a brick) smokes one item of the plantations:smokable tag. It takes the item from your other hand, or else the first one in your inventory. It lasts 128 uses. A Coca Quid is 3 dried coca leaves and a llipta. The Brownie is a dried bud, 2 wheat, cocoa beans, an egg and sugar.

Strength

One use has a strength of dose × potency. Potency comes from the item's quality: 0.5 at 0 %, 1 at the default 50 %, 1.5 at 100 %. Khat is also multiplied by its freshness. Strength then sets:

  • duration: the substance's base duration × (0.5 + 0.5 × strength), between half and three times the base;
  • amplifier: +1 from strength 2, +2 from strength 4, capped by the substance's max_amplifier;
  • comedown: its base duration × strength (½ to 4×). It starts when the longest main effect ends, and a new dose pushes it back.

Data

plantations:substance is a datapack registry (data/<ns>/plantations/substance/<name>.json):

{
  "effects": [ { "id": "plantations:alert", "duration": 3600 } ],
  "comedown": [ { "id": "minecraft:mining_fatigue", "duration": 1200 }, { "id": "minecraft:slowness", "duration": 600 } ],
  "max_amplifier": 1
}

amplifier (default 0) sets an entry's base level. The data map plantations:dose makes an item a consumable:

{
  "values": {
    "plantations:khat_bundle": { "substance": "plantations:khat", "dose": 1.0 }
  }
}

Anything eaten, drunk or chewed applies its dose when the use finishes, so a pack can turn any food or drink into a consumable. Smoked items also need the plantations:smokable tag. The tooltip shows a consumable's main effect.

Tolerance, dependency and overdose

Each player has, per substance, a tolerance, a dependency and a short-term load. They are kept through death.

  • Each use raises tolerance by tolerance.rate × strength of the remaining gap to 100 %. Tolerance halves every tolerance.half_life ticks. It weakens the effect, down to 30 % at full tolerance, and the action bar tells you when it is high.
  • Dependency rises the same way at dependency.rate, scaled by the config mode, and halves every dependency.half_life ticks (3 days by default). From 30 % dependency, going dependency.withdrawal_after ticks (half a day) without the substance brings on Withdrawal: level I from 30 %, II from 55 %, III from 80 %. The config mode limits it.
  • The load is the strength taken, halving every overdose.half_life ticks. A dose that pushes it over overdose.threshold × (1 + tolerance) overdoses: nausea, blindness and 4 + 20 × excess damage, where the excess is how many thresholds over you are. That can kill.
SubstanceTolerance (rate, half-life)Dependency rateOverdose threshold
cannabis0.15, 1 day0.04none
psilocybe0.4, 2 daysnonenone
coca0.15, 1 day0.03none
poppy0.2, 1.5 days0.23.5 (load half-life 2 min)
khat0.15, 1 day0.06none
salvia0.05, 1 daynonenone
daturanonenone1.5 (load half-life 5 min): a second dose soon after the first hurts, a few kill

Config (effects section): dependency = OFF (none at all), LIGHT (default: half the rate, withdrawal stays at level I) or REALISTIC, and overdose = true/false.

In the substance JSON:

"tolerance": { "rate": 0.2, "half_life": 36000 },
"dependency": { "rate": 0.2, "half_life": 72000, "withdrawal_after": 12000 },
"overdose": { "threshold": 3.5, "half_life": 2400 }

All three are optional. The defaults are tolerance 0.15 per day, no dependency and no overdose.

Visuals

Client-side only, and the client config controls all of it:

  • Psychedelic: the picture breathes and ripples, colours drift round the hue circle, and saturation rises.
  • Dissociation: the middle of the screen twists, a ghost image drifts beside it, colour drains to violet, and the camera sways and tilts.
  • Delirium: blur, a sickly green cast and a dark, slowly pulsing vignette. With hallucinations on, figures stand at the edge of sight and vanish when you look at them or after a few seconds. You hear mobs that aren't there, and empty inventory slots show items that aren't there either.

When several are active, the strongest pass wins (Dissociation, then Delirium, then Psychedelic). Visuals ease in, fade out over the effect's last five seconds, and grow with the effect's level.

Before the first visuals ever play, a one-time warning explains them and offers Show them, Gentle (photosensitivity mode) or Off. Client config (plantations-client.toml, also in the Mods screen):

OptionDefaultEffect
visuals.intensity1.0Strength of all screen effects; 0 shows nothing.
visuals.photosensitivefalseHalf strength at most, every change four times slower.
visuals.hallucinationstrueDatura figures, sounds and phantom items.
visuals.warningShownfalseSet once the warning has been answered.

The post-processing passes are assets/plantations/shaders/post/<effect>.json. Their programs are assets/minecraft/shaders/program/plantations_<effect>, because vanilla only looks for programs there. Resource packs can replace either.
